The Underemployed Life spoke with 36 year old entrepreneur Duane Peschke. Duane graduated with a business degree from the University of Notre Dame, and spent his post college career toiling away in jobs that left him dissatisfied and frustrated. He finally decided to leave the safety of a stable but unsatisfying job, and carve out his own career path. We asked him about underemployment, his experiences working for Safeway and AT&T, and leaving behind corporate America so he could start his business, American Hawg Biker Jewelry.

“You don’t need to be like everyone else. Do what you believe in. People will respect you more for it. Although you’ll always get people that will try and take you down. Go out and do your own thing.”

No, I Don’t Want To Read Your Book

I’ve noticed something rather troubling in my years of gainful underemployment. It’s when your manager/supervisor/owner asks you to read a specific book. A book they think is critical to your improvement and corporate betterment. A book that has a name like-The Key to Winning in Business, or some other nonsense title you’d rather not read on your own time….or well…ever.

Underemployment- My Secret Career

Often I’ve thought to myself, “Gee, why does my life suck so much, and why do I keep getting stuck in these terrible jobs?” Then the cascade of poor decisions I’ve made throughout my life floods my memory, reminding me exactly why.  “Oh yeah, my many, many mistakes.” I’m what’s known in this country as chronically underemployed.

“No kid grows up dreaming of having an awful career. No kid aspires to be an adult working as a mattress salesman. If they did they had very low ambitions, and yet, I guess on the plus side, they had reachable dreams, so you know what, good for them.”
